An online oddsmaker has already projected the possible pay-per-view (PPV) sales of the Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather Jr. super fight even as fans eagerly wait for news updates about the historic bout.
According to Yahoo! Sports, online betting site Bovada speculated that the fight could get a stunning 3.15 million pay-per-views.
“If it hit that number, it would beat the existing record by 650,000, which in and of itself is an extraordinary number for a pay-per-view,” analyst Kevin Iole wrote in his report to Yahoo! Sports.
The current record holder for the most pay-per-views was the fight between Mayweather and Oscar de la Hoya in 2007, which garnered 2.5 million hits.
The most pay-per-view revenue followed six years later when Mayweather figured in a battle against Mexican star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. That bout produced a total of 2.2 million buys and earned $150 million in sales because the show was priced higher.
Iole himself has his own prediction when it comes to the possible pay-per-view sales of the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight.
“My own estimate is the fight, if it happens in May 2, would do 3.25 million,” he said. “It's a phenomenally high number.”
Iole cited the fans’ extreme interest on the fight that should have happened five years ago.
“The interest in the fight is extremely intense, and it's essentially been promoted for five years as the negotiations have been on-again, off-again and the men have remained in the news,” he said.
But Iole said the interest might wane down if the fight fails to materialize on May 2, the target date supposedly agreed upon by Pacquiao and Mayweather.
“If it fails to be made on May 2, I would bet it loses its luster and doesn't do nearly as well as in the unlikely event it would ever get made again down the line,” Iole said.
