HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) has been around for a long time now.
In 2013 an estimated 1.5 million people worldwide died from the disease. HIV causes Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, better known as AIDS. Deaths from HIV have decreased 40 percent since 2005.
It is possible to be infected with HIV and not immediately have symptoms. The first symptoms of HIV resemble those of the flu: fever, severe fatigue, a non-itchy rash, swollen glands/lymph nodes, muscle aches, sore throat, night sweats and sores or ulcers in the mouth. After the initial symptoms have subsided it is possible for the virus to remain in the body without further symptoms for up to 10 years.
However, the virus remains contagious. Sexually active people can still transmit the disease to their partners even if they have no symptoms.
That’s why it is important to be tested.
Valley Aids Councils (VAC) operates clinics in McAllen, Harlingen and in Brownsville. Typically, results are available in two weeks. VAC has a rapid testing program providing results in as little as 20 minutes. Testing is also provided for other sexually transmitted diseases, such as syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia.
For persons who may have HIV or may have sexual relations with someone who has HIV the most important and effective precaution is the use of a condom during sexual intercourse. VAC provides condoms free of charge.
According to reports there are more than 3,000 people in the Rio Grande Valley currently living with HIV.
The number of cases of HIV may be underreported due to cultural factors, such as stigmas attached to homosexuality or promiscuity, and due to the large numbers of people passing through the Valley by way of illegal immigration.
You can learn more about HIV and AIDS by calling the Valley Aids Council at 956-428-2653.
Bill Reagan is executive director of Loaves & Fishes of the Rio Grande Valley.
